Bosch Expands Technology Centers In The U.S.

Bosch is strengthening its research and development activities in the U.S. In Pittsburgh, the company has opened its expanded development center at a new, central location after having outgrown its previous facilities. Measuring almost 5,000 square meters (53,819 square feet), the technology center located in the heart of Pittsburgh offers space for some 200 associates.

bosch-manufacturing-plant-inside“Pittsburgh is one of the smartest cities in the U.S. It is known for its innovative strength and start-up culture,” said Mike Mansuetti, president of Bosch in North America, at the official opening ceremony in mid-September.

“Pooling our activities at an attractive location gives us ideal conditions for further positive development. The company is banking first and foremost on its highly qualified associates and its long-standing local partnerships, especially with the renowned Carnegie Mellon University,” added Mansuetti.

Some 130 associates now work at the new location. Until recently, they had been based at various buildings throughout the city. The location focuses on developing internet and security technologies for the Internet of Things (IoT). In addition to basic research, which has been based in Pittsburgh since 1999, the new location also houses the Bosch subsidiary Akustica, which develops and markets microelectromechanical systems microphones. The market for these tiny high-performance microphones – which can be found in smartphones, tablets, wearables and other devices – continues to grow rapidly, according to Bosch.

Plymouth: Key Bosch Technologies for the Mobility of the Future

Bosch also recently expanded its technical center in Plymouth, Michigan, strengthening its development activities in the Mobility Solutions business sector. The focus here is on key technologies for the mobility of the future, such as automotive electronics as well as driver assistance and safety systems. The expansion has doubled the size of the engineering center, which was established in 2007, to 41,000 square meters (441,320 square feet). Situated near Bosch’s North American regional headquarters in Farmington Hills, the location now offers space for around 1,400 associates. Some 1,200 associates already work there today.

Bosch in the U.S.

The international supplier of technology and services has been present in the U.S. for 110 years. In 2015, the company generated sales of 11 billion euros (approximately $12.3 billion USD) there. Bosch currently employs some 17,800 associates in the U.S., 2,300 of whom are researchers and engineers. In the late 1990s, Bosch’s corporate research and advance engineering opened its first branch outside Germany, the Research and Technology Center (RTC). The RTC has locations in Palo Alto, Pittsburgh and Boston. Today, a total of around 100 engineers at the RTC in the U.S. perform research related to trends of the future for Bosch. These include internet technologies, automated driving systems, robotics, and battery technology, as well as sensor and chip design (IC design). The Bosch experts also work together with leading U.S. educational institutions, such as Stanford University, UC Berkeley, MIT and Carnegie Mellon University.
