Mercedes-Benz Tech Tip: Engine Dies When Transmission is Shifted into Gear

You may encounter a Mercedes in which the engine dies when the transmission is shifted into gear or when parking. Damage code 27 205 47 is also present. The cause of the problem is moisture (corrosion) in the connector for the starter lockout switch/transmission wiring harness.

You may encounter a Mercedes in which the engine dies when the transmission is shifted into gear or when parking. Damage code 27 205 47 is also present.

Affected models include those with the 140 chassis and engine 104.###, 119.### and 120.### #2 as of May 1, 1991.

The cause of the problem is moisture (corrosion) in the connector for the starter lockout switch/transmission wiring harness.

Repair Procedure:
1. Check the starter lockout switch for corrosion;
2. Replace the starter lockout switch if it’s corroded; and
3. Replace the transmission wiring harness.
