In certain instances, customers with an affected BMW vehicle may complain of the low oil level light on or a low oil level message in the check control after the ignition has been turned off. Checking the oil level with the dipstick shows the correct oil level.

Affected Vehicles: E39 (M54, M62TU engines) with Xenon lights produced in March 2003; E53 (M54, M62TU engines) with Xenon lights from October 2002 up to March 2003; all models with M52TU, M54, S54, M56, M62, S62 and M73 engines.

Important: For the complaint of low oil level message displayed while driving on X5 4.4 up to October 2002 production, refer to Service Measure B11 200 04, January 2004.

Cause I:
Coding data error in the Light Check Module IV (LCM IV).

Cause II:
The oil level sensor has been contaminated, reducing the capability of the sensor to accurately determine the oil level.

Correction for Cause I:
Recode the LCM module with DIS CD 34 or higher.

Correction for Cause II:
Replace the oil level sensor and refill the engine with fresh oil.

Service Procedure for Cause II:
1. Ensure that the engine is warm.
2. Loosen the oil filter cover to allow engine oil to drain into the oil pan.
3. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
4. Remove any underbody paneling or reinforcement as necessary to gain access to the sensor.
5. Drain the oil.
6. Disconnect the plug connection and unscrew the three nuts fastening the sensor to the oil pan.
7. Clean the sealing surface of the oil pan in the location of the sensor.
8. Replace the sensor and gasket ring with new parts.
9. Reinstall the underbody paneling or reinforcement, and lower the vehicle.
10. Tighten the oil filter housing cover and refill the crankcase to the proper level with new oil.

Note: Do not reuse the original oil.

Supercharger Pros And Cons

Customers generally look to superchargers for the instant throttle response, not fuel economy.

Superchargers are synonymous with making horsepower, especially in drag racing, gaining popularity and recognition as a viable power adder. However, they’re not the best option for saving fuel.

While most automakers are currently fascinated with employing turbochargers to make up for lost horsepower due to lower-displacement engines, do superchargers have a place in the current automotive climate? Indeed, this power-adder is more commonly found in the performance arena, because it produces power at lower rpm and comes in a smaller package than a turbocharger. But there are some downsides.
