Some 2002 Passat Sedan 4Motion W8-4.0L (BDP) models may exhibit some whining noise from the engine between 1,100 and 1,500 rpm (vibration may also be felt in passenger-side floorboard area).

This noise may be caused by the oil cooler mounting. Vibration from the oil cooler/filter flange (which is bolted to the vehicle chassis) could be transmitted to the body.

Service Information:
1. For vehicles produced prior to VIN 3B_E388529 and VIN 3B_P353571, identify three bonded rubber isolators on the oil cooler flange.
2. Identify the isolator:

  • “Old” bonded rubber isolator has metal casing 2/3 the length of the rubber between the studs.
  • “New” bonded rubber isolator is solid rubber between the studs and has no metal casing.

3. If old bonded rubber isolators are installed, replace the three isolators with new bonded rubber isolators.

4. Whenever the oil cooler mounting is removed, always install new isolators, using the appropriate sealer (see Repair Manual Group 17, Engine Lubrication, Oil filter housing, disassembling and assembling).
