ContiTech’s Power Transmission Products Group is now offering a full line of products and services designed to help technicians easily detect and repair faults in belt drives. Using specially designed tools and equipment, ContiTech says it is focused on issues that can stop a vehicle or machine, not to mention a business.

“Diagnostic technology is essential for inspection work,” said Roger Homer, North American business development director for ContiTech’s Power Transmission Products Group. “Many companies can offer tools or equipment, but they often fall short of the entire process by not offering the technical support that’s essential to solving many power transmission issues.”

The diagnostic products and issues most prominent today include:

1) checking for belt-wear;

2) a laser tool for alignment measurements; and

3) a belt-tension measuring device.

Checking for wear: Wear in multi V-belts is not always visible to the naked eye. The ContiTech Belt Wear Tester (BWT) detects the level of wear and tear by checking the profile geometry of individual ribs. A product film shows how it works, and is available online at www.contitech.de/aam under “Service & Accessories.”

Alignment measurements: The ContiTech LASER TOOL quickly and reliably measures whether all the pulleys in the belt drive are aligned, the company says. Only with the correct diagnosis can the fault be corrected to ensure that the belt drive functions as designed. The LASER TOOL can be used on all automotive multi V-belt drives including those with plastic pulleys and can be seen on YouTube.

Belt tension measurements: Technicians and belt fitters cannot rely on instinct alone. The Belt Tension Tester Hz (BTT Hz) accurately measures the tension of timing belts and multi V-belts in accordance with the latest method – frequency measurement in hertz.

In addition to these tools, ContiTech offers complete installation instructions for each product. Instructions are available for download in PDF format under Technical Instructions in the Product Information Center (PIC) (www.contitech.de/pic).

Belts and Pulley Alignment

A misalignment of the plane of the belt can occur when a pulley is not parallel to the other pulleys on the belt drive system.

Drive Belt Alignment Alignment is key to the health of an engine belt. The belt drive system is designed to create friction between the grooves on the belt and pulley to transfer power from the crankshaft to the alternator, water pump or power steering pump. If the grooves on the belt do not align with the pulleys, the friction won’t be evenly applied and can result in wear and noise.
