Tech Tip: Volkswagen Has MIL On, DTCs P1355, P1358, P1361 or P1364 Stored in ECM Fault Memory

This tip is associated with 2002-’04 2.0L Golf, Jetta, New Beetle and New Beetle Convertible vehicles.

figure 1Affected Vehicles: 2002-’04 2.0L Golf, Jetta, New Beetle and New Beetle Convertible

Technical Background
The MIL is on, with one or more of the following DTC(s) stored in DTC memory.

DTC     DTC Text
P1355   Ignition activation cyl. 1 Open circuit
P1358   Ignition activation cyl. 2 Open circuit
P1361   Ignition activation cyl. 3 Open circuit
This condition may be caused by a faulty ground (GND) connection.

Repair Wire…000 979 230
Butt Splice…111 971 939 B
Seal…357 972 741 B
Wiring Repair Kit…VAS 1978A

Note: Do not substitute any other part numbers for wires, butt splice or seal.

Service
Install the new ground wire from the coil connector to Ground 12 under the battery as follows:

Note: When working with batteries, always review Cautions and Warnings in: Repair Group 27, Battery, General information; “Vehicle batteries” in Owner Manual, Tips and Advice; or Remove battery (see Repair Group 27, Battery, Removing and installing, for the appropriate model).

Golf, Jetta:
– Locate and remove the terminal from coil
connector T6d/1 (see appropriate wiring diagram if necessary).
– Terminate this wire by neatly taping it to the
existing wire harness (do not cut the wire).

New Beetle:
– Locate and remove the terminal from coil
connector T6a/1 (see appropriate wiring diagram if necessary).
– Terminate this wire by neatly taping it to the existing wire harness (do not cut the wire).

Golf, Jetta, New Beetle:
– Cut repair wire 000 979 225 to 22” (558.8 mm)
and install the new seal; then slide the seal near the terminal, see Required Parts & Tools.
– Cut repair wire 000 979 230 to 12” (304.8 mm).
– Splice the repair wires together using the butt splice. Do not substitute any other wires when making and assembling the repair wire.
– When finished, the correct repair wire length should be 34” (863.6 mm).
– Heat the butt splice using a heat gun from the Repair Kit noted in Required Parts & Tools.

Golf, Jetta:
– Insert the terminal into cavity T6d/1 of the coil connector.

For New Beetle:
– Insert the terminal into cavity T6a/1 of the coil connector.

Golf, Jetta:
– Remove the cap nut from stud GND 12 under the battery tray.

See Figure 1.Figure 2

– The ground terminals, cap nut and stud should be clean and free of paint or corrosion.
– Route the new ground wire along the existing harness to ground stud GND 12.

New Beetle:
– Remove the cap nut from stud GND 12 (near the fender).

See Figure 2.

– The ground terminals, cap nut and stud should be clean and free of paint or corrosion.
– Route the new ground wire along the existing
harness to ground stud GND 12.

Golf, Jetta, New Beetle:
– Fasten the new wire using the previously removed cap nut.
– Tightening torque: 9 Nm +/- 1 Nm
– Secure using tie straps as necessary.
– Reinstall the battery.

Belts and Pulley Alignment

A misalignment of the plane of the belt can occur when a pulley is not parallel to the other pulleys on the belt drive system.

Drive Belt Alignment Alignment is key to the health of an engine belt. The belt drive system is designed to create friction between the grooves on the belt and pulley to transfer power from the crankshaft to the alternator, water pump or power steering pump. If the grooves on the belt do not align with the pulleys, the friction won’t be evenly applied and can result in wear and noise.
