TRW Automotive Aftermarket has announced a range extension for its premium disc brake pad program in North America.

The range extension comprises 54 part numbers and will provide coverage for an additional 12 million vehicles. This expansion brings the total number of application numbers in the program to more than 800 and covers nearly 94 percent of the vehicles in operation in North America, the company says.

Of the 54 part numbers, 47 are ceramic and seven are semi-metallic. Forty-three of them have installation hardware included in the box. Applications cover a range of makes and models, including: 2013 Hyundai Elantra, Veloster, Equus; 2013 Honda Civic, Pilot, Ridgeline; 2013 Ford F150, Focus, Escape; 2013 Chrysler/Dodge, Town & Country, Caravan and Journey and the 2013 BMW 3 series, Mercedes G-Class.

“TRW is the global leader in the design, development and manufacture of OE safety systems which we translate into a leading aftermarket range and service package," said Mark Thorpe, TRW’s product group manager, TRW Aftermarket North America. “Our main objective is to support our customers with the highest-quality product and to ensure the safety message reaches every level of the supply chain. By making sure that our range extensions are both timely and appropriate, and by listening to our customers to ensure that we get the right mix, the market can have complete confidence in TRW.

“We make it a priority to be first to market with new references in order to help our customers to grow their businesses," Thorpe added. "This is the first in a series of range extensions planned for 2013 for this market-leading program.”

TRW says it has used its unrivalled engineering expertise as a leading OE brake systems manufacturer to ensure the brake pad program offers the most suitable friction formulation for each vehicle application to optimize safety and performance. Where appropriate, TRW includes installation hardware in the box, facilitating optimal installation and on-the-road performance.

TRW’s friction material is made from a formulized mix of ingredients to facilitate a stable friction coefficient and optimized braking performance in hot or cold temperatures, at high or low speeds and under difficult or challenging conditions, proven over millions of miles of real-world driving, according to the company. Providing an offering of chamfered, slotted and shimmed designs, the range comprises ceramic and semi-metallic brake pad sets. For a quieter and more comfortable drive, TRW’s brake pads are fitted with premium shims, which act as a damper between the friction material and the brake caliper, the company adds.

Long-Life Coolants Explained

Different types of coolants cover a range of applications from diesel to domestic, Asian and European vehicles. Each one is formulated to a specific manufacturer’s specifications to keep their engines at an optimal temperature. But, changes to the old one-size-fits-all formula has led to confusion for consumers and even some technicians.

Diagnosing Intelligent Cooling Systems

The majority of cooling systems on the roads react to what is happening inside the combustion chamber. After the engine is stressed, the heat causes the thermostat to open. Increases in temperatures will also cause the cooling fans to come on. The heat carried by the coolant is the trigger for operation of the fans and thermostat.

Modern Cooling System Design: It’s Not About Temperature; It’s About Powertrain

Given the advanced state of internal combustion engine technology, some recent cooling system innovations will actually increase engine torque and fuel economy while reducing exhaust emissions. Let me simplify that idea: new cooling system technology will make engines run better and cleaner. So, let’s get on the same page by reviewing some basics.
