Tech Tip: Whine, Growl or Vibration Type Noise from Buick Engine Compartment

There may be a whine and or growl noise from the engine compartment accompanied by a vibration during various driving conditions. This may include vehicle acceleration/deceleration, steering input and cornering left. It may be mistaken as a transmission noise or power steering pump concern.

Tech Tip: BMW ELV Won’t Release – No Start, No Crank

The customer complains of a no-crank, no-start situation. The condition may be intermittent. The ELV (Electric Steering Lock) warning is shown in the Instrument Cluster.

Tech Tip: Infiniti Front End Popping/Squeaking/Clunking Noises

Applied vehicles: 2004-’10 Qx56 (JA60) [all 2004-’09 and 2010 vehicles built before: 5N3ZA(*)N(**)AN 904401] If you confirm: A noise (clunking squeaking popping) can be heard when performing at least one of the following actions: – turning the steering wheel left or right; – driving over speed bumps; – driving on rough roads; – accelerating or

Alignment and Suspension Specs: 2005-2011 Chevrolet Equinox

The alignment process of the Equinox is mechanically straightforward. The front suspension is a MacPherson strut design with hydraulic bushings in the lower control arms. The rear suspension is a four-link layout.

Tech Tip: In-Line Power Steering Filter

Particles not removed during the flushing process or particles
from everyday wear of components and hoses cause valves to stick and block fluid flow. When replacing any power steering component, always flush the entire system and then install an in-line filter.

Tech Tip: Mercedes-Benz Steering System Grinding/Gushing Noises

If you receive customer reports of grinding or gushing noises, which may be heard from the area of the steering system/power steering pump, one of the possible causes may be in the A/C compressor belt drive. This noise is similar to the noise produced by the power steering pump when ingesting air. This type of noise is present at both idle and higher engine speeds, can be heard whether the steering wheel is stationary or moving, and the noise frequency increases with the engine speed.

Tech Tip: Old-School Method of Flushing Still the Best

After replacing power steering components, technicians may experience a lack of assist, intermittent assist problems or noisy operation. This may be caused by the system not being completely flushed of all debris and contamination.

Tech Feature: Solving Steering Wander

As frustrating as diagnosing steering wander complaints might be, most can be solved by thoroughly inspecting the physical condition of the vehicle. In the following text, I’ll cover some of the most common causes of steering wander and how to detect them during an undercar inspection.

Alignment & Suspension Specs: 2005-’10 Ford Mustang (Plus Shelby)

In 2005, Ford introduced a new Mustang with an all-new platform and clean-sheet design. While the formula of a live axle rear and MacPherson strut front end were the same from the previous model, Ford refined the design. These changes make for a vehicle that is easier to align and diagnose compared to the previous generation.

Tech Tip: Remote Power Steering Pump Reservoirs

This Tech Tip covers power steering-equipped vehicles with a remote mounted pump reservoir. Technicians may find that the replacement power steering pump produces no pressure, pump is noisy or fluid over-flows after shutdown. This may be caused by restricted flow out of reservoir or an air-bound system due to a restriction in the system.
