Fuel: It’s The Tank, Not The Pump

One of the most basic procedures when replacing a fuel pump – and often the most overlooked – is inspecting the fuel tank.

Not Sure That Air Filter Needs To Be Replaced? Check The Fuel Trim

Unlike a carbureted engine, today’s cars’ electronic fuel injection systems can control many factors including the precise amount of fuel needed to operate as close to stoichiometrically perfect as possible – which is neither too rich nor too lean and allows the engine to use as much oxygen as possible.

Lifetime Air Filters: Fad Or Future?

In 2005, Ford took the air filter game to a new level by introducing a lifetime air filter on Ford Focus models with the 2.0L or 2.3L PZEV engines. If you are thinking this was an oiled cotton filter, you are wrong. The filter was designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle and would never need service or replacement.

Transmissions And Scan Tools

The transmission game has changed. Solenoids, sensors and computers have replaced vacuum lines, governors and kick-down cables on modern automatic transmissions. The tools have also changed: Scan tools, scopes and meters have replaced pressure and vacuum gauges.

Direct Fuel Injection Diagnostics

Direct injection is becoming standard on more and more late-model vehicles. These systems can be a diagnostic challenge but, with the right foundation, problems can be solved profitably.

Fuel Trim Theory And Operation

The modern engine measures two things extremely well, the amount of air going into the combustion chamber with the mass airflow (MAF) sensor, and the byproducts that are generated by the combustion event with the oxygen sensor. These measurements allow the engine’s computer to put the right amount of fuel and spark into the cylinder to give the most efficient and cleanest combustion event.

Hyundai Sonata Fuel System Diagnostics

There is no doubt that the Hyundai line has come a long way in the last 10 years, and they are certainly gaining in popularity – the result of a good product being offered at a competitive price point. We work on a lot of Hyundais and we have many customers who commute 80 to 100 miles a day getting to work.

Variable Camshaft Timing And Back Pressure Issues

The variable “valve” timing that most of us see in our shops is actually variable “camshaft” timing that improves low- and high-speed torque by advancing or retarding the camshaft timing on single overhead camshaft (SOHC) engine applications.

Diagnostic Solutions: Fuel System Pressure & Volume Checks

For maximum efficiency, modern import fuel injection systems require that fuel be delivered at a specified volume and pressure. Because the fuel injector’s job is to mix fuel with the intake air charge, it must produce a finely misted, conical spray pattern through the fuel injector nozzle. Lower-than-specified fuel pressures not only fail to provide enough fuel for combustion at larger throttle openings, but may also introduce an uneven air/fuel charge distribution into the combustion chamber itself, which usually results in hard starting, hesitation and reduced power output.

Cheap Filters Cheapen Your Service

Filters remove harmful, microscopic particles from oil, intake air and the vehicle cabin, but to the customer, microscopic particles are just that — microscopic. The sense of urgency isn’t there like with a lit MIL or pulsating brake pedal. Overcoming those perception problems and adding urgency is a two-step process. First, magnify the issue. A
