Carburetor Tuning Through the Years

The modern “square” design of Holley carburetors was popularly introduced during the late 1950s. Because this style of Holley carburetor featured a simple, modular design with interchangeable parts and a great degree of adjustability, it immediately found favor with performance enthusiasts. In this story, we’ll use the Holley 4150-series carburetors to illustrate how to select,

Tech Tip: Mustang Burning Smell is a ‘Head’ Ache

Marty dropped off his 2002 Mustang GT saying there was a burning smell inside the car. He also noticed a wisp of smoke from the passenger side when parked in his garage. After some investigation with leak detection dye and a black light, I called Marty with the bad news.

Honda Tech Tip: Dealing with EGR Issues

Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) has been used for years to control combustion temperature to prevent spark knock as well as control NOx emissions. For the most part, these systems were trouble-free and required service only if you were dealing with a spark knock issue, or if the valve opened too early, resulting in a tip-in acceleration stumble, or the more common, bad idle quality caused by the valve not closing completely at idle.

EGR Issues: Dealing with P0401 Codes

ht=”245″ alt=”” align=”right” /> As emission controls got tighter, and with the advent of OBD II, things started to change. We not only saw additional driveability complaints, but we also had the check engine light (CEL) telling the customer there was an emissions failure that had to be dealt with for the good of the

Tech Tip: Volkswagen Coolant Pump Leakage

Coolant pump seals are designed to use coolant as a lubricant. This design intentionally uses a small amount of coolant to coat the seals during pump operation. Any excess coolant that accumulates will exit the weep hole when the engine cools down. Minute traces of coolant or lubricant residue around the weep hole is not evidence of a faulty pump. Do not confuse a leaking coolant pump with one that is functioning as designed.

Horsepower TV to Devote an Entire Show on 2007 MAHLE Engine Builder Showdown

Horsepower TV, a leading automotive television series, is devoting a full 30-minute episode on the 2007 MAHLE Engine Builder Showdown. Horsepower TV airs on Spike TV. The Showdown, which was held at the NASCAR Technical Institute in Mooresville, NC, resulted in a record-breaking engine building effort by Pro Motor Engines’ team of Dennis Borem and Darrell Hoffman.

Tech Tip: Diagnosing and Servicing a Coolant Leak

Water pumps work hard. As the miles add up, so does the wear and tear on the pump shaft bearing, seal and impeller. Erosion inside the pump can wear away the vanes on the impeller, causing it to pump less efficiently as the impeller is eaten away. This may lead to engine overheating on hot days or when the engine is working hard. If the water pump seal becomes worn, coolant will leak past the pump shaft or out of the small vent hole on the housing.
