Makita 12V Cordless Drill/Driver, Model 6227DWLE — Mostly used as cordless screwdriver for dash work and installing accessories. Much better than larger cordless drills. My wife now uses my 20-year-old 9.6V Makita around the house. Great products.

Power Probe II Circuit Tester Kit with Case — Excellent dual lead tester with 20’ leads. No problem finding a ground and you can power-up/test the device off the car. Looks cheap, but works great and helps solve electrical problems. Comes with a training video and also works with Power Probe’s short finder. An accessory kit is available too.

Tracerline Telescopic Penlight Fluorescent Leak Detector, Model TP8650 — The BlueMax line of UV lights from Tracerline is the only way to go. This telescopic UV penlight is perfect for starters. In fact, Tracerline UV lights are the only ones that show leaks and not corrosion and fireflies! When it comes to UV leak testing equipment, I only purchase Tracerline products.

My Laptop Computer — I could not operate without my laptop in the service bay along with the highband Internet connection. Information is everything, and I cannot imagine a shop without access to this information. We are a dealer and use DaimlerChrysler Techconnect. If you have an independent shop, you will not survive without Internet access and subscribing to online repair information sites. Anything less and you’re just a lube shop. Prepare to spend around $3,000 to $6,000 per year for information and training if you want to stay in this business.

AirCat 1/4” Drive Mini Ratchet, Red Handle — This fairly cheap air ratchet is somewhat longer than most 1/4” drive ratchets. Makes up for lack of quality in design. I love the design of the trigger. I think I’ll give their 3/8” version a try next. Everybody seems to want high torque/speed and more power these days — not me.

Genisys Scan Tool — Good coverage.

iATN — Nothing like it in the business.

Identifix Online — Lots of information, fills in the gaps for information, the hotline is ready to assist.

OTC Palm Scanner/Labscope — Quick and easy.

ALLDATA Online — Always available, good information.
