Tennessee Dealer Accused of Dumping Nearly 1,000 Tires

A tire dealer in East Lake, near Chattanooga, TN, has been accused of paying people a reduced fee to dump used tires, saving money by avoiding proper disposal. The dealer would pay 50 cents for each tire removed, compared with the $2 per tire fee required for proper disposal.

A tire dealer in East Lake, near Chattanooga, TN, has been accused of paying people a reduced fee to dump used tires, saving money by avoiding proper disposal.

Chattanooga’s News Channel 9 located one of the men who claims he took the tires from Dodds Avenue Tire and Wheel, and subsequently dumped them across East Lake. The man estimated there could be as many as 1,000 used tires littering the area. He claims the owner of the tire dealership – who Channel 9 said it could not reach for comment – paid the man 50 cents to take each tire, compared with the $2 per tire fee required for proper disposal.

The man reportedly was arrested last August and ordered to clean up the tires, but has yet to do so. He told the news station he was trying to come up with the money to take the tires to the recycling facility. Last week, a local judge ordered him to pick up 100 tires and deliver them to the recycling shop within 20 days.
