Some 2000 VW Passats with the 2.8 V6 5V engine may exhibit coolant leaking at the oil cooler hose. The problem may be caused by the oil cooler turning when the oil filter is removed or installed.

Service Procedure
1. When replacing the oil filter:
• Observe the oil cooler when loosening the oil filter.
Note: If necessary, hold the oil cooler while removing the filter. If the cooler moves too far, damage to the coolant hose may result.
2. If the oil cooler moves from its original position:
• With the oil filter removed, loosen the oil cooler nut and adjust the cooler back to its original position.
3. Check the oil cooler hose. It shouldn’t be twisted or pinched.
4. Tighten the oil cooler nut. Torque should be 30 Nm.
5. Install the oil filter and hand-tighten it, making sure the oil cooler doesn’t move.
6. Inspect the cooler hose to ensure that it isn’t twisted or pinched.

Why can’t you trust some spark tests?

You have probably seen some reality TV shows where the “builder” will pull a spark plug wire to confirm they have spark. This is one of the most misleading tests for the ignition system. If the spark plug produces a spark, the spark is at 14.6 psi (normal air pressure at sea level), not 170 psi or more inside the cylinder during the top of the power stroke.
