Some 2008-’10 Focus vehicles built on or before December 23, 2009 may exhibit a ticking noise from the fuel rail or injectors at idle that may sound like upper valvetrain noise.

Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

Service Procedure

1. Remove the two fuel rail to the cylinder head attaching bolts to allow access for cover (P/N 9E5Z-9K540-A) installation.

See Figure 1.

Note: It is not necessary to remove the fuel rail.

2. Slide the insulator over the fuel rail. Water may be used to aid in installation.

See Figure 2.

Note: Do not use any other form of lubrication.

3. Reposition the fuel rail and tighten fuel rail bolts 18 lb.-ft. (25 Nm).

Alternator Testing For No Charge Conditions

Many alternator problems turn out to be nothing more than a bad connection at the alternator or a bad wiring harness.

If only battery voltage is present at the battery on a running engine, does this mean the alternator is “bad?” No, it does not. It only means that the alternator is not charging, but does not reveal why. Therefore, it does not point to a faulty alternator. All too often, the alternator is condemned by technicians due to this test alone. The cause could instead be a module that distributes the power to the vehicle and regulates the alternator.
