Indirect Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems On Import Vehicles

Indirect Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) began making a comeback in 2011 on all Audi models. The highly popular Honda Accord switched to indirect TPMS for the 2013 model year. Most of these models have the optional ABS and stability control system.

Stocking, Selling And Installing TPMS Sensor Service Kits

Every time a stem-mounted TPMS sensor is removed from a rim, it must be serviced – no ifs, ands or buts. This goes for sensors that are six months old to six years old. Always use a new kit. The typical kit includes a nut, valve core, grommets and valve cap. Each component has a specific function and lifespan that is not only determined by time, but what happens when it is installed.

Indirect Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems Making A Comeback On Some Imports

Indirect Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) are the systems that do not have air pressure sensors inside the tires. Rather, they detect a low tire by comparing relative wheel speeds via the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) wheel speed sensors. New systems are taking advantage of better wheel speed sensors and modules to make indirect systems work. Indirect TPMS began making a comeback in 2011 on all Audi models. The highly popular Honda Accord switched to indirect TPMS for the 2013 model year.

Real-World TPMS Tips And Tricks

If you’re a shop owner or technician, you probably already know that TPMS has been mandatory equipment on all cars since 2007. You’re probably also well aware that many of your customers do not know this, nor do they generally know much about the fragile nature of the sensors inside their tires. This can sometimes cause some customer/shop conflict, especially in the area of the corrosion issues to which TPMS valve stems have proven particularly – and fatally – vulnerable.
