Most catalytic converter failures can be traced back to problems caused by what happens in the combustion chamber. Almost every part on the engine determines how long it will last. It could be a faulty line of computer code that pulses an injector too long, or it could be a stuck piston ring that allows oil to be sucked into the combustion chamber. These little details can limit the life of a catalytic converter.

AAIA received a letter on May 21 from Jared Snyder, assistant commissioner for the Office of Air Resources, Climate Change & Energy in the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), announcing that the agency will delay enforcement of the June 1 implementation of six NYCCR Part 218-7.2 (c), adopted standards for new aftermarket catalytic converters.

Kia’s OBD II engine management systems use dual oxygen sensors, which among other things allow monitoring of the efficiency of the Manifold Catalytic Converter (MCC), also referred to as the “warmup” cat. Some technicians who retrieve DTC P0422 – Main Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1) mistakenly replace the catalytic converter under the floor of the vehicle (possibly because the converter under the car has been referred to as the “main” catalyst).
