Raybestos, Logano Head Home to Make Sprint Cup Series History

Growing up Joey Logano watched his first Cup race from the bleachers of the New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Recently, the native of Middletown, CT, became the youngest winner in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series history by winning the LENOX Industrial Tools 301 at the very same race track. Logano's victory was the fourth of the 2009 season for cars using Raybestos brand brakes.

Logano’s victory was the fourth of the 2009 season for cars using Raybestos brand brakes.

In a tumultuous, rain-soaked race that saw 21 lead changes and 11 cautions, Logano received a free pass onto the lead lap after Scott Speed crashed in Turn 1 on lap 191. Logano then took the lead on lap 264 as the last car on the lead lap yet to make a scheduled pit stop. The race was stopped for the final time five laps later earning Logano his first career Sprint Cup victory.

The victory was extra special for the Raybestos Rookie of the Year contender and his Joe Gibbs Racing teammates since they struggled during the first half of the race. Logano spun on lap 184 bringing out the race’s 9th caution. He also lost a lap after having to pit several times for repairs to his car.

However, despite the early-race difficulties, the Raybestos brakes on the No. 20 Toyota once again responded all afternoon.

“We had plenty of issues going on today, but we didn’t have any problems with the brakes,” said Greg Zipadelli, Logano’s crew chief. “Everything worked well. The brakes seemed to do what they needed to all afternoon, and in conditions like we had today that is imperative.”

To gain a competitive advantage at New Hampshire, the Joe Gibbs cars used the Raybestos brand Sprint Cup braking system. The Raybestos Sprint Cup braking system featured on all JGR Sprint Cup Toyotas features ultra-lightweight aluminum alloy six-piston calipers – the stiffest and lightest calipers in all of NASCAR.  The innovative calipers were developed using Raybestos technology partner Alcon’s state of the art “optimized design” process, and include an asymmetric body design and advanced between-piston and crossover cooling features. The new Raybestos Short Track brake package also provides for the largest brake pad volume (surface area) and largest rotor (13.15” outside diameter, and 1.65” thick) available in NASCAR.
