Washington — President Barack Obama is going under the hood of the nation’s economy Wednesday.

The president will get a first-hand look at two Ford Motor Co. hybrids and learn about a General Motors Co.-backed auto mechanic program when he tours Northern Virginia Community College in Alexandria to tout the importance of creating jobs.

Ford spokeswoman Christin Baker said the company was pleased the president would be getting a look at a newer version of his former vehicle.

"We are excited the president will be highlighting some of Ford’s many fuel-efficient vehicles that are helping customers save at the pump," Baker said.

Obama also will tour a General Motors Automotive Service Program classroom and meet with students that are part of the school’s "Drive 2 Employment program."

GM spokesman Greg Martin praised the president’s impending visit.

"This program highlights the economic multiplier effect of the auto industry," he said. "Tomorrow’s cars will be even more advanced than today’s."
