The Monroe Brakes product line from Tenneco Inc. has received the 2010 Product Differentiation Excellence Award from global research firm Frost & Sullivan. The annual award recognizes an aftermarket supplier’s ability to develop products that address critical unmet needs of automotive service providers.

Tenneco was the first aftermarket brakes supplier to package complete hardware kits, wire wear sensors and lube with brake pad sets for many applications. As “The Total Solution!” in brake pads, this approach gives professional technicians the opportunity to complete more high quality repairs each day. Tenneco already packages hardware kits, sensors and lube with hundreds of Monroe Dynamics semi-metallic and Monroe Ceramics ceramic-formula brake pad part numbers and continues to expand this approach across its broad aftermarket product line.

In addition to its “Total Solution” packaging approach, Tenneco provides customers with application-engineered friction formulations and pad and shoe designs that are based on the original equipment technologies for each vehicle model. This OE-focused engineering strategy helps shops reduce brake service comebacks related to noise, pedal feel, pad life and other potential issues.

“Tenneco was the first supplier to recognize a critical and unmet need and we responded with an innovative, packaged solution that differentiates Monroe Brakes components from competing brands,” said Tony Carter, product manager, North American Aftermarket, Tenneco.

The Product Differentiation Excellence Award is based on five criteria: unique product features and functionality; quality and complexity; customization; matching of a product to the needs of the target market; and overall brand perception. The Monroe Brakes product line scored an 8.0 average on a 10-point scale across these criteria, compared to a 7.2 rating for the next-best performing aftermarket brake line.

“Thousands of service businesses now are relying on Monroe Brakes to perform complete, high quality brake repairs,” said Carter. “Professionals’ trust in the Monroe brand and our unique ‘Total Solution’ approach helped open the door to many of these installer locations, but we’ve earned their loyalty through exceptional product quality and performance. Shops are choosing Monroe Dynamics and Monroe Ceramics pads because they help solve the problem the first time.”

Long-Life Coolants Explained

Different types of coolants cover a range of applications from diesel to domestic, Asian and European vehicles. Each one is formulated to a specific manufacturer’s specifications to keep their engines at an optimal temperature. But, changes to the old one-size-fits-all formula has led to confusion for consumers and even some technicians.

Diagnosing Intelligent Cooling Systems

The majority of cooling systems on the roads react to what is happening inside the combustion chamber. After the engine is stressed, the heat causes the thermostat to open. Increases in temperatures will also cause the cooling fans to come on. The heat carried by the coolant is the trigger for operation of the fans and thermostat.

Modern Cooling System Design: It’s Not About Temperature; It’s About Powertrain

Given the advanced state of internal combustion engine technology, some recent cooling system innovations will actually increase engine torque and fuel economy while reducing exhaust emissions. Let me simplify that idea: new cooling system technology will make engines run better and cleaner. So, let’s get on the same page by reviewing some basics.
