The Motorist Assurance Program (MAP) announces an important addition to its Uniform Inspection & Communication Standards (UICS). This addition, which is effective immediately, focuses on power steering fluid exchange and the replacement of power steering pumps, steering gears and rack & pinion units.

Laboratory and field testing show that most Power Steering Fluids degrade measurably by 50,000 miles. Therefore, the revised UICS (steering & suspension) suggests a one time exchange of power steering fluid at 50,000 miles — if a service interval is not included in the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule. Additionally, the power steering fluid should be exchanged whenever a system component (pump, hose, rack & pinion, etc.) is replaced.

"These additions to MAP’s UICS should help to facilitate communication between service providers and motorists," said MAP President Barry Soltz. "MAP hopes this standard will be used when counseling consumers about suggested services, so motorists will recognize the importance of ‘preventive maintenance’ — and act before a component fails."

All UICS are available in PDF format, and may be downloaded from the "Members Only" section of MAP’s website: www.motorist.org. (Member ID and passcode required to access the UICS online.) Non-AMRA/MAP members may order current UICS at: www.motorist.org.
