(Ottawa Citizen) A 29-year-old man was killed in Vars, Ontario, Monday (April 20, 2009) as he attempted to find the leak in a large off-road dump truck tire and it exploded.

The man was working outside the Giant Tire Specialists shop to find the leak in a tire designed for six-wheel-drive off-road dump trucks. He had inflated the tire and was hosing it down to locate the source of the leak when the tire exploded, said Bruce Skeaff, spokesman for the Ontario Ministry of Labour.

The explosion left a 60-centimetre hole in the wall of the tire, Skeaff said.

The labour ministry issued an order to George Levesque Tires Ltd., the company that owns Giant Tire, to preserve the scene for their investigation, which is being conducted by inspectors and an engineer.

The ministry’s investigation will look into whether the man was qualified to be doing the work and whether the work was being done properly in the correct setting, Skeaff said.
