Lexus Tech Tip: A/C Condenser Fan Relay Corrosion on 1998-2000 LX 470s

Some 1998-2000 model year LX 470 vehicles may have a condition in which the A/C condenser fan continues to run after the ignition is turned off due to corrosion in the relay connector. A repair kit (P/N 88840-60070) consisting of a new relay and sealant has been made available to correct this concern.

1. Remove the A/C condenser fan relay. See Fig. 1.

a. Disconnect the connector.
b. Remove the two relay bracket retaining bolts.
c. Remove the relay from the bracket.

2. Clean the connector terminals of the engine wire harness. If necessary, replace the engine wire harness.Figure 2

3. Connect the new relay to the wire harness.

4. Wrap the connector and wire harness with the sealant tape.

5. Press the sealant tape from all sides to ensure good contact.

Note: Ensure that there is no gap between the relay and the sealant tape. See Fig. 2.

6. Reinstall the relay to the bracket.

7. Reinstall the A/C condenser relay retaining bracket and torque the retaining bolts to 5.0 Nm (48 in.-lbf.).

When a driver sets a temperature in the control head of an HVAC system, what does it mean to the vehicle? Seventy-two degrees could mean many different settings depending on the outside temperature, humidity and even the position of the sun.

When a passenger decides that 70 degrees is a better temperature for their zone, things get even more complicated. Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) systems require a complex array of internal and external sensors that include ambient air temperature sensors, interior temperature sensors, outlet duct and evaporator temperature sensors, pressure sensors, humidity sensors, blend door position sensors and sunload sensors.
