Like many car owners, Mesa resident Mary Whitaker had difficulty finding an auto-repair shop she felt she could trust.

But for the past two years, Whitaker has been satisfied taking her vehicle to Motortek, an independent shop not far from her home.

"Most of the time, when a woman goes in (to a shop) it’s not the same as when a man goes in," she said. "But I trust them. I know they’re not going to do anything that doesn’t have to be done. They go out of their way to help me."

Whitaker said she would not have found Motortek if it were not for Neighborhood Auto Repair Professionals, known as NARPRO, a network of family owned, independent auto-repair shops that have banded together in an effort to provide quality service, increase local business and battle the big chains.

Businesses in the network must pass an application process, including 26 different criteria, and pay monthly dues. They also must maintain standards in order to remain part of NARPRO.

"I wouldn’t have thought of Motortek if not for NARPRO. The credibility from being (a NARPRO member) absolutely helped," Whitaker said.
