Hyundai Tech Tip: Very Brief, Slight Headlamp Dimming

The 1999-2003 Sonata, 2001-2003 Santa Fe and 2003 Tiburon V6 may exhibit a very brief, slight dimming of the headlamps for only a few seconds immediately after: the A/C compressor clutch is activated; the rear defroster is turned on; the HVAC fan is turned on high; or any other large electrical load is encountered.

The 1999-2003 Sonata, 2001-2003 Santa Fe and 2003 Tiburon V6 may exhibit a very brief, slight dimming of the headlamps for only a few seconds immediately after:

• The A/C compressor clutch is activated;
• The rear defroster is turned on;
• The HVAC fan is turned on high; or
• Any other large electrical load is encountered.

In order to minimize engine RPM fluctuation, an electronic control system is utilized to gradually increase the electrical load on the generator.

This load control results in the very brief (less than 5 seconds), very slight dimming of the headlamps.

This condition does not adversely affect visibility or headlamp illumination in any manner. Some customers may notice this characteristic and may ask if this constitutes normal operation. This condition is NORMAL and does not reflect any malfunction of the electrical system. Do not attempt to repair this condition.

Do Technicians Need Tips?

Asking for a tip would not go over well with your future customers.

You have probably seen many more businesses and retailers asking for tips during checkout. It is the screen typically seen before you approve the charge. I started to think about what would happen if shops would try asking for tips when customers picked up their vehicle.

Asking for tips would probably not have gone over too well with customers in the past or in today’s constantly shifting tipping culture. I think it is a question of how people think technicians are compensated. If you are paying 20% gratuity on a meal, it is understandable. But, technicians and shops provide more than a service, they provide expertise and tools that should be compensated through the number of hours billed, not a tip from the customer.
