Government Launches CARS.gov Website

The U.S. government recently launched the CARS.gov website following the passage of the Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save (C.A.R.S.) Program, which will provide up to $4,500 to car owners who trade in their present car for a more fuel-efficient and environmentally-friendly alternative.

The U.S. government recently launched the CARS.gov website following the passage of the Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save (C.A.R.S.) Program, which will provide up to $4,500 to car owners who trade in their present car for a more fuel-efficient and environmentally-friendly alternative.

The program goes into effect July 1st and will last until November. The $1 billion in funding for the program should allow approximately 250,000 Americans to trade in their old vehicles for more efficient models.

The new CARS.gov site offers a list of "Frequently Asked Questions" about the program. However, official rules determining whether a vehicle meets the 18 mpg or less requirement have yet to be determined. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which will oversee the program, has about 30 days to develop the rules for implementation of the program. Dealerships interested in participating in the program are directed to register on the site.
