COLONIE — A Clifton Park man has been arrested for faking a car theft and trying to collect the insurance, according to the New York State Insurance Department.

Investigators said Matthew Carpenter, 38, took his Jeep from a Colonie repair shop following an accident without the shop knowing. He parked the car at the airport, but reported it stolen and filed for $22,000 in theft insurance.

He never paid the shop $3,700 for the repairs, investigators said, instead cashing the repair insurance check.
