It didn’t take long for thieves to do a lot of damage at an auto repair shop in East Memphis.

The crooks who were after catalytic converters damaged nearly a dozen vehicles parked outside Classic European Motors on Thomas Road.

Thomas Davis, co-owner of Classic European Motors, says they were already behind in their work and now things just a got a whole lot busier.

"They took the saw and took the cats and stole a stereo, took a couple of TV’s," said Davis.

During the night thieves cut a whole through their fence and stole catalytic converters off of at least nine cars parked behind this repair and service shop.

They also stole TV’s and stereo systems out of some of the vehicles and even the tires and wheels off one car.

Determining Catalytic Converter Efficiency

Almost every part on the engine determines how long a catalytic converter will last.

Oxygen Sensor And Catalyst Efficiency

The catalyst efficiency monitor verifies that the catalytic converter is operating at a high enough efficiency rating to keep exhaust emissions within predetermined values. The PCM compares the signals from the upstream and downstream oxygen sensors to determine the state of the converter. These “tests” are called the readiness monitors.

Catalytic Converter Replacement

If you are replacing a catalytic converter for a customer, it is not the same as replacing a muffler or pipe. Since the catalytic converter is an emissions device that is federally and locally mandated, documentation is just as key as proper installation.
