The Camless Engine

The FreeValve concept, also known as fully variable valve actuation, eliminates the camshaft. Instead of lobes on a camshaft, there are electromagnetic or electrohydraulic actuators to open the poppet valves.

The timing and lift of the intake and exhaust valve can be controlled with a module instead of a chain. The system can then “decide” based on driving conditions which one to use to maximize performance or minimize fuel consumption and emissions. The other benefit is the elimination of the camshafts and the chain of belts. This can reduce noise and allows the engineer to create a more compact engine. Alternator Testing For No Charge Conditions

Many alternator problems turn out to be nothing more than a bad connection at the alternator or a bad wiring harness.

If only battery voltage is present at the battery on a running engine, does this mean the alternator is “bad?” No, it does not. It only means that the alternator is not charging, but does not reveal why. Therefore, it does not point to a faulty alternator. All too often, the alternator is condemned by technicians due to this test alone. The cause could instead be a module that distributes the power to the vehicle and regulates the alternator.
