The FreeValve concept, also known as fully variable valve actuation, eliminates the camshaft. Instead of lobes on a camshaft, there are electromagnetic or electrohydraulic actuators to open the poppet valves.
The timing and lift of the intake and exhaust valve can be controlled with a module instead of a chain. The system can then “decide” based on driving conditions which one to use to maximize performance or minimize fuel consumption and emissions. The other benefit is the elimination of the camshafts and the chain of belts. This can reduce noise and allows the engineer to create a more compact engine. For more information, visit freevalve.com.
