TOYOTA RECALLS

Toyota Motor Company, Ltd.
1996-1998 Toyota 4Runner
Number Involved: 273,743
Defect: A combination of heavy loading (simultaneous loading to rear gross axle weight rating and gross vehicle weight rating) and severe steering maneuvers could cause the 2WD 4Runner to lose directional stability. Although the 4WD 4Runners do not exhibit the handling condition, Toyota will recall these vehicles to avoid any public confusion as to which vehicles should receive the replacement parts.
Remedy: Dealers will replace rear suspension parts. The manufacturer has reported that owner notification was to begin during February 2002. Owners who do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

Toyota: Camry
March 12, 2001
GEORGETOWN, KY – Toyota is recalling 53,061 Camrys made at its Georgetown, KY plant between August 1997 and November 2000. The V6 Camrys, model years 1998 through 2001, may have a deformed accelerator cable housing, which could cause the cable to "wear away and eventually break," according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. A broken cable could cause vehicles on cruise control to return to idle or stick at their current speed, "increasing the risk of a crash," the recall notice said. Toyota has confirmed 10 incidents involving the faulty cable, although none led to an accident.
