Tech Tip: Liquid Tools Tip

Each side of the engine block has four main bearing cap side bolts that hold the bearing caps to the side of the engine block. The bolt threads, however, aren't sealed at the factory, so sometimes engine oil can seep past the threads and the bolt washer, causing a leak on either side of the block. Fortunately, it's an easy fix, so there is no need to replace the short block.

Vehicles affected: 1995-2002 Passport, 1995-2010 Accord, 1999-2010 Odyssey, 2003-’10 Pilot, 2006-’10 Ridgeline, 2010 Accord Crosstour (all compact V6 models)

Each side of the engine block has four main bearing cap side bolts (see Figure 1) that hold the bearing caps to the side of the engine block. The bolt threads, however, aren’t sealed at the factory, so sometimes engine oil can seep past the threads and the bolt washer, causing a leak on either side of the block.

Fortunately, it’s an easy fix, so there is no need to replace the short block. Just remove the affected side bolt and clean it. Then apply Hondabond HT Silicone Gasket (P/N 08718-0004) to the threads and washer contact area, reinstall the bolt and torque it to spec. To ensure a good bond, make sure you let the sealer dry for at least 24 hours before starting the engine.
